ASPARAGUS PLEASE!

AN INCIDENT AT CHECKERS HOW MR CHURCHILL USED HIS RATION An amusing incident which occurred while Mr S. G. Holland and Mr F. W. Doidge were lunching at Checkers with Mr Churchill was told by Mr Doidge in the course of his address ,in Tauranga last week. Mr Doidge said that Mr Holland was seated on Mr Churchill's right and he (Mr Doidge) on the Prime Minister's left'. Included on the menu was asparagus and Mr Holland being on the right the dish first went to him. He glanced at it 9 noted the quantity and the number of people to lunch, and modestly helped himself to three pieces. When the dish came round to Mr Doidge there was still some left and he took live pieces and then handed the 1 dish with about eight pieces still on it, to Mr Churchill. The Prime Minister, then glanced at Mr Holland's, plate, noted how much asparagus he had taken and remarked: "'Don't you like asparagus Mr Holland?" "I certainly do," replied Mr Holland, whereupon Mr Churchill said: *We}l, have some more,' and put what was left of the asparagus on Mr Holland's plate. Mr Churchill then called upon the butler for some more assparagus and was told ''I am sorry .sir, but that is your ration for today."
