Local Award Included in the latest list ol' Army for gafllantriy published is the name of Temp L. Sgt R. Thompson, of Whakatane who has ijoen awarded the Miitary Medal. Sailors Home Donations As in the past, the Whakatane Borough Council last evening decided to donate the sum of £1 to the Auckland Sailors Home. Boy's Accident A painful dislocation of the left arm was Miffered by a young Colin Morpeth second son of Mr and Mrs Rex Morpeth of Salonika on Saturday afternoon last. He was removed to hospital and X-rayed. 'Lucky' Dance The attention of dancers is drawn to the Gym. Club dance which is to be held on Friday 13th t in the Caledonian Hall. Petrol—No. 1 available until 31 at face value. Apprentices and Journeymen Notice of a question relating to te training of journeyemen was given in the Hotise of Representatives by Mr W. Sullivan Bay of Plenty). Mr Sullivan assed the Minister of Labour to take steps to prevent the dismissal from employment of boys who were being ' trained in useful which owing to the war had not sufficient ® * journeymen to provide the full ratio of journeyemen to apprentices required by the existing awards or regulations. He said that the Labour Department had recently been instructing employers so placed that they had either to dismiss their apprentices or be prosecuted. The employers would willingly engage additional tradesmen if they could get them. The employment of boys and youths contributed tow 7 ards meeting the deficiency of skilled tradesmen. Prisoner of War Air Lettercard
The acting-Postmaster General (the Hon. F. Jones) has announced that the special air mail lettcrcard introduced in November 1941, for 9 communicating with prisoners, of war in Europe is being withdrawn from sale at the close of business on June 30. Altogether over of these cards had been sold but the demand was now negligible. The Minister said that after this card is withdrawn from sale persons desirous of communicating with prisoners of war who were in German or Italian hands and who had not yet been reported safe should use the ordinary air lcttcrcard at present available for communicating with forces personnel. Cards for such prisoners should be addressed, to the care of the New Zealand Army post office 33 The Strand London WC2. » ' > For communicating with prisoners of war and civilian internees in Japanese hands the special air mail postcard introduced in December } 1944 would still be available at all post offices.
