YOUNGER MAORI LEADERS WANTED
RECENT controversies figuring in this and other papers regarding the difficulty experienced in bringing home to the Maori people the need to fully vecognise their responsibilities, brings forcibly to the forefront the glaring need for potential leaders among the younger generation of the Maoris of today. Great work \ias been accomplished in the past by the established tribal leaders, but observers declare that there is a distinct dearth of promising younger men who are willing to step out in the service of their race. It is high time that our Maori friends were spoken to as man to man in all things appertaining tq the responsibility of citizenship. We have in the past been far too prone to cloak our problems and be blind to our own shortcomings. If we require a higher standard of life, of work and of citizenship from the Maoris let us meet them face to face and hear from them direct a few of our own weaknesses. Possibly then we, will find' the new blood in Maori leadership, for which there is now such a crying and drastic need.
