WHALE WASHED UP
OP APE BEACH FIND SECURED BY RESIDENTS ~ A whale about '20 l'eet in length and about 12 feet in circumference was discovered stranded on -the Opapc beach last week by Mr B. Tairua ? who was driving one of Mr Ron Smith's trucks at the time. Mr Tairua sounded the horn of the truck and in a short time a large crowd' assembled on the beach Avhere the whale was awash and flapping its tail in the water. The Maoris pro-
seeded to secure the whale with ropes and although it was still alive ' it appeared to he sick or, very weak'. When the whale was securelytied up the Maoris proceeded to kill it and by mid-day only the skeleton remained. A number of people from Opotiki visited Opape to see th<j whale. The Avhale Avas striped on the under side. There was the usual hole near the head through Avhich the whale breathed. The tail was like that: ofi a shark and there were high fins oni the bod}'.
