RELIEVING FLOODING
qOUNCIL DECIDES TO ACT ECHO OF RECENT COMPLAINT As a result of further investigation following the complaint '• lodged last month by Mr H. S. 1 Mexted 1 regarding the continual flooding of his land due to inadequate culverting constructed - by the Council some years ago; the Whakatane County Council last Tuesday decided to instruct the engineer to compile esti- I mates for wooden bridges to replace the culverts in both Mexted's and! Bryant's outlets. 1 In the course of the discussion Councillors conceded that the whole position had been definitely aggravated by the culvert serving Mexted's property, where during the last flood a 9 inch head of water had been backed up on the farm. Cr Leslie Introduced a further identical instance at Edgecumbe where another ratepayer Mr Bryant was complaining of a similar state of affairs though on a smaller scale. "We' will be faced with this sort of thing all over the plains " said , Cr Luxton who. went on to say that as the Hats consolidated and the water was confined to pockets it would be. found that the old drainage system was completely inadequate.
