RIVER EROSION

TOWN BRIDGE APPROACH BOROUGH COUNCII/S CONCERN Borough and County Councils will • be united in their representations to • the P.W.D. regarding * the urgent need for protective Avork south of the Whakatane River Bridge where ( serious erosion is threatening the bridge approaches. The work is a ■ long-standing necessity regarding which continued representations to the Department have been made from time to time without success. At the meeting of the Borough. Council last Monday the District P.W.D. officer stated that the. delay in carrying out the work was entirely due to the lack of workmen and nothing could be done until more labour was available. Cr Shapley emphasised the seriousness of the position. The river he said, was now only about one chain from the road, and any preventative measures must become a major work owing mainly to the delay. Cr Sullivan said the whole matter was one of responsibility for the Government, and if the Department stirred itself he was sure something would be done. , - . The Council decided to write drawing the P.W.D. attention to the serious threat to the bridge which • 9 would lie a costly matter to replace."
