BLUE NOSES IN VOGUE THE 'FREEZING OFF' PROCESS Why is. it that townsfolk accumulate wholly on the .sunny side of the street? That pink ilannel mufflers peep gently from beneath coat collars? That the human proboscis takes on a delicate tint of marine blue? That Scotsman (particularly of the braw type) wander round with mouths: Avide open? Aye! Nac doot its because o' the nip in the air! And each morning semes to be nippier than the last. AVhen we arise (with the exception of the legal profession) at unearthly hours in the morning to be ready to commence our daily toil at 8 a,m. or 8.30, it is small wonder that a colossal shiver runs through the population, for the ground and everything else outside is invariably coated in a mantle of white.
The frosts over the past few days particularly ? have been heavy indeed for this part of the country and it is small wonder that the majority of citizens are convinced that the second ice age is already upon us. In. number of instances outside taps have been found frozen first thing, while a report from a farmer in the district says that he has even had the whole of his cowshed facilities frozen up. Naturally, with heavy frosty comes ice and ice never fails to attract kiddies like steel to a magnet. Ap-. parently coldness must be a quality peculiar to adults for schoolboys seem to take an inherent delight in fingering lumps of frozen water, smashing it, hurling it at cach other and generally having a good time at its expense. Not so the frozen cyclists, who betake their benumbed bodies, to work each morning, pedalling it through the ic'3 r atmosphcre j and, when in pairs discourse heatedly oh a cold subject. Not theirs to posses? a swift comfortable auto in which to glide easily to their work. Not theirs to sit in the warm atmosphere of a luxuriously upholstered car, safe from wind and frost. No! Theirs is & much harder lot. The lot of the 'not rich enough to buy a car not even on the timepayment system.' But business men possessing the aforesaid swift comfortable autos do not escape scot free. They arise in the morning (some of them) and with the icy claw of hunger appeased begin, their day. But it's not all beer and skittles. They lind their engine frozen, assets frozen, faces frozen and everything else susceptible in the same, condition. No! Life is no fun for anyone in the winter, excepting maybe the police force and they're always hot—• on the trail. In we have decided that the old saw about the early bird catching the worm is predated, We'd much rather stay in bed, and if the worm had any sense he would too!
