PRAISE FOR BRIGADE
BOROUGH COUNCIL TRIBUTES AN ASSET TO THE TOWN The Whakatane Fire Brigade came in for its full share of warm and unstinted! praise at the! Borough Council meeting last Monday evening when a letter was received from the Supertendent requesting that a 4 inch main be laid along Clifton! Road at the rear of the premises facing the south Strand. Superintendent Stewart contendled that such a precaution was absolutely essential asi a safeguard against future fires in that section. The letter was supported by Cr Creeke who said that had a head oi* water been available from that end to combat the recent fire only 25 per cent, of the damage would have taken place. As it was the men had to battle tlirough smoke and ilame in order to bring the hoses 'to the rear. Cr Canning said that the insurance adjuster was high in his praise l'or the which lie said had effected a remarkable save in the face of many difficulties. The Mayor added his tribute stating that in spite of the severe going the brigadesmen had handled, the fire efficiently and effectively. Cr Shapley thanked the speakers for their remarks as a member of the Fire Board } and added that the townspeople could count themselves very lucky in having the services of the brigade, and particularly in j possessing a man at the head, so capable and experienced as Superin-J tendent Stewart. On the Mayor's motion it was decided to write a letter of congratulation, to the brigade.
