THEFT OF EIDERDOWN
OFFENCE BY MAORI Charged in the Whakatane Court before Messrs G. A. Brabant and J. King, J.P.s with the theft of an eiderdown quilt valued at the property of Charles Raimona Hiraka, a Maori of Te Teko was yesterday sentenced 1 to one month's imprisonment in the Whakatane gaol. Accused pleaded guilty to the charge and elected to be dealt with summarily. For the Sergeant Farrell stated that the offence occurred on June 5 on the night of the Te Teko Dog Trials. 'At the meeting during the day, numerous competitions were held in order to assist the funds, and the first prize attached to one of these was the eiderdown in. question. This was won by Mr Cruse who placed it in his: car. That night he attended the dance held in connection with the Dog Trials, and when he. was about to leave, he discovered the quilt was * missing. It was later discovered by the police on accused's bed. Commenting on the fact that it was a mean type of offence, the Justices passed sentence of one month's imprisonment.
