GRANDMOTHERS' DERBY

FINAL POSITIONS ANNOUNCED FARMERS' CANDIDATE SCORES TOP At the Derby Ball, which was held on Monday evening (King's Birthday) at the Edgecumbe Hall, and which followed the race meeting held that day Mr D. S. Radcliffe an-i nounced the results of the positions of the Grandmothers in the Grandmothers' Derby. These were as under: — Mrs A. Marx, Farmers Grand-* mother 1; Mrs Goldsmith Services Grandmother 2; Mrs J. Rutherford, Industries Grandmother 3; Mrs J. Campbell, Sharemilkers Grandmother 4. Mr Radcliffe went on to voice his and his committee's appreciation of the work j>ut into the effort, and the manner in which the district had lent, its support. He paid a tribute to all officials connected with the day's events and thanked them for their co-operation. In making a presentation to each of the Grandmothers of a cartoon by Mr Hans Haeusler depicting their effort Mr Radcliffe complimented them for their own untiring work. Musical honours were then accorded the Grandmothers. The call "Cheers for Mr Radcliffe" brought an enthusiastic response. Mr lan B. Gow replying on behalf of Mr-s A. Marx, referred * to the spirit behind the effort and felt a measure of pride on its success. Mr Ken Civil on behalf of Mrs Goldsmith thanked her committee for their generous support and expressed the opinion that the competitive spirit had crowned the dis-> trict's effort with success.

Mr J. in his< reply] for Mrs Rutherford made special j mention of the efforts, of Mrs E. B.! List. Mr Jack Shaw briefly but suitably replied for Mrs Campbell and was received with acclamation. Warm praise is extended to those ladies ably led by Mrs Jack Huish who throughout the day toiled to satisfy hungry patrons and who cheerfully did. another tour of duty at the Ball. The accountants connected Avith this prodigious effort were also congratulated on their accuracy. Mr R. E. Blair and his team balanced to a halfpenny at the-close of the :proceedings.
