28th ANNIVERSARY

METHODIST CHURCH IN WHAKATANE BRIGHT PROGRAMME PRESENTED

An enjoyable entertainment was held in the Methodist Hall, King Street on Wednesday evening, in celebration of the 28th Anniversary of the Methodist Church in Whakatane. In his introductory remarks, the Rev. A. F. Attwood briefly outlined the history of the church in the Bay of Plenty f saying that 30 years ago, Tancatua was the centre of Methodism in this and Whakatane one of the little, 'outside' preaching places. Through many vicissitudes and difficult times, the Church had made splendid progress since those early days. A novel feature of the entertainment was that every department of the Church contributed to the programme which did not lack in humour and' variety. The choir sang "Brighten the Corner .Where You Are" and "The. Sinner and the Song." The Ladies.' Guild assembled on the stage as in a meeting, and Mrs Albiston read a humorous sketch, followed by a double duet and chorus. The Bible Class staged a very effective humorous play entitled "Social Difficulties." For the Mr E. Broadmore played a flute solo, and Mr Attwood gave a humorous monologue. The Mrs Muir, rendered a musical monologue accompanied by Miss G. Kenyon. The Congregation's items were community singing, and a cornet solo by Mr L. Broadmore. The Quarterly Board gave a humorous play reading "The Seures Teacups." The Sunday School Teachers sang as a quartette "The Little Brown Church in the Vale," and Miss G. Kenyon gave a much appreciated pianoforte solo. The Society Stewards entertained with a most realistie and somewhat gruesome 'Shadow Play.' The Orphanage Secretary, Mrs Teesdale, gave a short appropriate reading. The Home and Foreign Mission Mesdames Albiston and Lichtwark, combined in a delightful full dress representation of a Maori and Pacific Island Scene. The singing of the Doxology brought an enjoyable evening to a close.
