MEETING THE HOUSING SHORTAGE

GENERAL approval must be given to the recent decision of the Whakatane Borough Council to extend the scope of its by-laws in order to permit of the erection of temporary accommodation in the face of the drastic shortage of houses in this town. The decision may be regarded as sound and logical in the face of the extraordinary position which has arisen, and whatever risk may be involved regarding precedent, such arguments must go down before commonsense reasoning. Whakatane will not be the only borough which will be forced to either ignore or amend its existing by-laws in order to meet the serious situation, and even yet may be called upon to be even more liberal-minded in its attitude towards its citizens before the shortage of standardised dwellings has been met.
