Remnants of Patriotism Even at this late date it is possible to see a few flags, still hanging from business premises in the town or displayed in shop windows—memories of V-E Day. They ar.e we presume, mainly the ones left al'tei certain irresponsibles had completed their orgy of thieving and although they have been battered by wind and rain they still hang together and float bravely above the street. Regional Planning The setting up of a sub-committee to represent Whakatane on the Regional Planning Council recently constituted at Tauranga occupied the Borough Couneil last when lit was decided to appoint three Borough Councillors, two members of the Chamber of Commercr and two members of the Harbour Board. The Borough representatives will lie the Mayor and Cr.s Sliapley and Morpeth.
Football Postponed Due to the ilood and constant rain, all Rugby l'ootball fixtures lor Saturday were postponed. Analysis of Amazing Discovery While idly ambling along the pavement. the other day ? a Beacon representative stumbled upon what had the appearance, of being a sensational arehialogical discovery. A round and battered obejet was lying in the gutter and our sleuth immediately recognised it (or thought he did) as an ancient Roman shield such as was in common use by Brutus and his cohorts (testimonials available on application). The .sleuth immediately withdrew his tomohawk, and hacking off a small portion placed it in his handkerchief (in order to preserve linger prints), sealed it in an envelope registered it five times insured it, and sent it off to be analysed. The result of the analysis came by return mail this moaning and reads as follows: Insurance, five per cent (surcharged fully and still owing). Registration marks: usual type. Envelopes: non-stickable, non-stamp-ed etc. Finger prints: Peter the Whaler's. Suspected Anshunt Roniun Sheeld (portion thereof); ordinary common or garden dust-bin lid such as is not supplied free of chargc by the Whakatanc Borough Council. P.S. Wot 'appened to our Beacon on Friday your loving friends The Government Analysing Department please when are you going to pay your account?

Flood 1 Humour Splashing round his shop in gumboots last Saturday morning f the well-known proprietor of the Poroporo store was seen to hastily scribble out a notice, and hang it over the front of his cash register for ill the world to see. The notice read: "'lt s moments like these, you need jVlint'ies." Ha-Ha ! A rather surprising degree of original wit was shown by a local farmer in hi/i retort tr> the question as to how lie managed to reach safety across a stretch of ilood water. The farmer in question had been stranded and the intervening water 'twixt him and his destination was well over his head. Tn reply to the query as to how he managed to get across he replied: "Oh I saw a friend passing asked him to toss me a bar ol soap and I washed myself ashore!"
