The Bay of Plenty Beacon Published Tuesdays and Fridays. TUESDAY, MAY 22, 1945 THE VICTORY LOAN
THE campaign for the 1945 Victory? Loan opened with a request for little over half the total required last year, and within two days £11,000,000 had been subscribed. There is no real reason why the remainder should not be forthcoming in a very short space of time, for the main arguments that applied to previous war loans apply just as forcibly to the present one., It may be argued by some that the war in Europe is over, and that New Zealand will probably not have such an interest in the war against Japan, but that will not hold water. Even though the European war is over, the New Zealand Division must still be fed and clothed and transported back eventually to its home-land, and all that is not done by the wave of a magic wand. The second great consideration is this, that with the final end of the war drawing nearer, the danger of inflation is also increasing. By making investments in Government stock for a fiveyear period the people of New Zealand are going to safeguard their savings better than most other ways by preventing themselves from making unwise, purchases at high prices. After the last conflict, prices rose continuously for three years and then a disastrous slump occurred. No sane person wishes such a tiling to happen again, and yet it can happen unless the general public, who control the bulk of the money in the country, safeguard its value by refraining from encouraging upward price trends. It is a major duty owed to the soldiers of this war to ensure that their allotments when they return are worth their face value. Therefore it is the duty of every citize* to invest his surplus cash in the. Victory Loan for* 1945.
