A sentence of fourteen days' imprLsonment which was later changed at the request of accused to a fine of £10 to lie paid by the. following dav in default a reinstatement *' J '5 of the former sentence was passed by Messrs G. A. Brabant and C. H. Christensen J.P.s in the Whakatane ♦ J Court on Wednesday on Sonny Walker a Maori of Whakatane.
Accused who pleaded guilty was charged with stealing a ehequc on May 12 to the value of 17s.
For the police, Sergeant Farrell stated that accused had found the cheque and had not notified the envncr or the police. The cheque, which was the properly of Norman Evans was paijd to Evans on February 9. Some time later lie had lost it and
had reported the matter. It was ascertained later that it had been cashed at the Commercial Hotel bv
Walker, who had appropriated the money to his own use. The name of both the payee and the drawer were, on the cheque so that there was no possible excuse lor Walker not returning ii. Sentence as stated above was 9 9 passed, together with an order for restitution of the amount of the cheque.
