Contagious Abortion
The work ol' vaccination ot' heifer calves against conutagious abortion has been stiil lurther expanded by the Department ol' Agriculture. In 194.3 some 18,000 calves were vaccinated by the department. Data has been collected from 721 herds showing that the abortion rate in 1943 among unvaccinated 2 year old heifers in these herds was 21 per cent. In the same herds in 1944 the abortion rate in vaccinated 2 year old • heifers was 3.2 per cent. This was in line with results secured in overseas eountrics j and represented confirmation of tlie previous results mentioned to you at last year's Ward Conferences. In 1944 the de-i partment vaccinated, approximately calves, and applications during the present year indicate that a total of at least GO 000 calves will be vaccinated. This work is undoubtedly resulting in a tremendous saving to dairy farmers and the Department of Agriculture is to be congratulated on the speed with which it has expanded the tion of calves.
