MAIZE PLUCKING

CONFERENCE WITH NATIVES

A combined meeting of the Primary Production Council and maize growers set up a committee to discuss with representatives of the natives, the organising of gangs and fixing prices for the work of picking maize. This growers committee met. last week with Mr W. A. McCracken presiding. Also present were Messrs P. Baird D. Butler W. Davies A. ' '' ' McLean R. C. Thompson and Ivere Wano and representatives from the Native. Settlements of Tc Teko, Paroa, Poroporo and lluatolci. The subject was fully discussed, but no finality was reached on the price question. The committee submitted to the natives for their consideration, that a fair and equitable price should be on a graduated scale, according to the yield of the crop, arid, suggested the picking l)e done per super bag dumped and nailed 80 bushel crop 1/- per bag 70 bushel 1/1 (30 bushel 1/2 50 bushel 1/3 and 40 bushel 1/4 free of tax and transport pro'? vided. A- super bag of cobs is about equivalent to one bushel of shelled maize. The committee later revised a schedule of cropping costs for submission to the Minister of Production.
