ARMISTICE HOLIDAY
THE QUESTION OF PAY
HOSPITAL EMPLOYEES
When the Government requested the observance of a National holiday to mark V.E. Day y there were many institutions throughout the country who found it iml- - to comply with the suggestion, and moreover also found the utmost difficulty in arriving at a fair basis of compensating rates of pay for employees under existing awards. The Whakatane hospital furnished just such an instance. When the matter was discussed by the Board last Friday the secretary (Mr A. Bridger) said that it was obvious that the holiday applied to all general employees, and he .sought a ruling from the Board as to whether the nursing staff should also be paid for the holiday they , were unable to take. The Chairman (Mr L. Buddie) thought it only fair that the nurses should be paid along with everybody else. The Secretary: The point is where does the nursing staff begin and end ? This query gave the Board food for thought and it was finally decided to make enquiries as to ,what other Boards were doing and to re-i l'er the matter back to the Finance Committee with power to act.
