BUTTER AND CHEESE
QUESTION OF LOCAL MARKET
That the dairy industry representatives had been unable to reach agreement with the Government on the question as to whether the dairy producers, or the country as a whole should carry the costs above the price realised incurred in holding down the retail price ol' butter and cheese sold on the local market was 9 reported to the Whakatane Ward Conference of the Dairy Board by the Board's. Chairman Mr W. E.. Hale. "During all its negotiations with the Government " said Mr Hale "the I f Dairy Industry Committee has never conceded to the point that the costs above the price realised in holding the retail price of butter and cheese on the local market, should be a charge on the Dairy Industry Stabilisation Account. We maintain that this cost is the responsibility of the. Government and should be carried by them as part of the general costs of stabilisation. However on this '9 issue the Government was not prepared to meet us and we had to remember that, if the Government chose to do so, it could force the issue. We therefore agreed that the matter should be submitted to arbitration and steps are now under way to prepare the industry's case. You will realise of course, that in 9 view of the pending arbitration it would not be right for me to discuss with you any details of the industry's case " he concluded.
