SUCCESSFUL DANCE

FRIDAY NIGHT'S ENTERTAINMENT EFFORT TO RAISE FUNDS , A very successful dance, which re J alisexl £37 was run by the Wliakatane Boys' Band on Friday evening, dancers, from many parts of the district attending. The Fire Brigade which volunteered to co-operate was responsible for the organisation. The object was to raise funds in order to send a number of local boys, to Wellington to compete hi the first Band Contest to be held since the outbreak of war. Dancing commenced at the usual time and continued until a late 9 hoiu\ under the control of Mr Red (pardon we mean Fred) to whose credit must go the. fact that no dull moments were permitted to interrupt the proceedings. Music which was of the usual popular standard was supplied' by the Premier the Boys' Band and the Pipe Band. Hall decorations were unstinted. Greenery massed round the pillars, and walls was offset by a string of multi-coloured lights suspended in front of the dais, the. whole supplying exactly the right touch of atmosphere to the dance. A soft drink stall, which was under the experienced managership of Mr Ward was popular with the crowd despite the fact that the coolness of the weather offered some competition. Novelty dances ever popular } were well to the. fore ' and were well supported by the crowd. In a brief approximately half way through the evening, Mr A. J. Canning outlined the object of the dance, at the same time extending thanks to the Fire Brigade and the Pipe Band for the assistance they had rendered. Thanks were also extended to Mrs Mayo ; Mrs King and Mr Jarrett s whose eH J'orts were responsible for training the boj-s selected in preparation for the competition.

The supper was excellent and very much enjoyed by all present. The preparation and serving was in tlie'capable hands of a ladies' committee which performed its. task to the complete satisfaction of everyone. Novelty dances were won as um der:— Monte Carlo: Mr MeMarr and Miss. Kelly. Lucky Spot Foxtrot: Miss Anne Delahunty and partner. Monte Carlo: Mr J .Miles and Miss E. Fyfe. Lucky Gay Gordons: Miss V. Woods and' Air J. Rust. The following boys are the. players who have been selected to take part in the contest: Leonard Broad more (B Flat cornet), Phillip Moore (Tenor trombone) Allan Moore (Double B Flat bass) Richard Ward (E Flat bass), Peter Ward (E Flat horn), Garry Skelton (B Flat cornet) , Brian Skelton (Euphonium). The competitional quartette will be L. Broad-i more R. Ward G. and B. Skelton.
