BEE-KEEPING INTERESTS

NEW WHAKATANE ASSOCIATION Under the auspices of the Whakatane Bee-keepers, Mr Patterson, Government Apiary Instructor addressed an interested meeting of members and others at the High School last Friday evening. Mr I. Hubbard presided. Taking as his Reading 'Essentials of Beekeeping' Mr Patterson emphasised the necessity for a correct beginning and the use of standard equipment. He produced a avjisp's nest and draw interesting comparisons between the habits of the two insejcts. Mr Airey, secretary of the Westland Association, was- also present and pointed out the. advantages gained from forming an Association in Whakatane and compared beekeeping in Westland with the conditions in the Bay of Plenty. He contended that the Bay was particularly favoured for the industrj' in view of its mild longer season and lower rainfall. The meeting decided unanimously to form a local association and to affiliate with the National Body. Many interesting questions were asked in a period- of open discussion. The next meeting will be held on May 18, when it is hoped all interested in thus work will attend. Further information may be obtained from Mrs IJi. C. Petty, the newly appoint e d secretary.
