ALL AND ALE FLOODING
NO EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE URGENT NEED TO DEEPEN DRAIN Reporting to the Borough Council last week the Mayor said that with reference to the flooding at Allandale the chairman reported that extensive enquiries had been made locally and elsewhere for a suitable dredge wherewith to deepen the Wainui-te-Wliare but without success. The Land Drainage Department had been communicated j with at Thornton and Auckland but while expressing every desire to assist they found it impossible by reason, of serious arrears in their own work. The possibility of obtaining a suitable mechanical or horse-drawn scoop was being investigated. The Works Committee recommended that the Foreman Engineer be given authority to hire the County loader for the purpose, of clearing the mouth of the stream in the vicinity of the Commerce Street bridge. Criticising this measure, Cr Morpeth declared that the real trouble lay at the. rear of the sections- entering Valley Road, where the stopbanks had been levelled and where there;: was only 2ft r Gin. freeboard, against 6ft. or 7ft. further down. The. Mayor replied that the Foreman was doing his utmost to relieve the position with the means at his disposal. It had been found too dangerous to utilise the County loader too far .down the drain owing to the soft nature, of the bed.
