AWAKERI'S GALA DAY

HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL GYMKHANA

RECORD CROWD ASSEMBLES

SPECTACULAR CHOPPING

EVENTS

The last of the official district Gymkhanas took place last Saturday in the* form of the postponed Awakeri which in spite' of the fact that a number of side shows which were listed for the original date, could! not be present came fully up to expectations and produced a splendid day's isport for the record crowd) which assembled in Howell's paddock. The 1 chopping section was obviously the most attractive feature of the day and events reached a standard surpassing anything seen in the district hitherto. The field was once again at its best and provided a good surface for the ring competitions, which drew very satisfactory fields and provided some keenly contested finishes. The athlctics likewise drew good fields, D. Sharkey winning the shorter distances with Farrelly capturing the longer events. The spectacular 120 yards hurdles went to J. Mitchell. It' was pleasing to note young Latimer's placing in the mile open. This lad is a coming distance man. Entries in the chopping events exceeded all expectations and in at least one instance competitors fees exceeded the prize money. The four events were all well worth seeing and whipped the spectators to a great pitch of excitement. Curry carried off the 12in. and 14in. open, while W. Scarletti another veteran who has been attracted i>ack to the block& found third place in the 14in. chop. The junior division was attractive, particularly in the ring events where the entries were substantial.

As in other centres, the ladies of the district came forward and staffed and stocked the refreshment and produce stalls in a manner which was most praiseworthy. The organising generally of the meeting was a model of efficiency and we have the warmest congratulations for the committee as a whole and particularly for the president and the secretary who toiled assiduously to ensure the success of the day.
