THE CHILDREN OF ITALY

ONE of the most vivid impressions upon one of our local soldiers recently returned from the Italian front, was the plight of the children in liberated Italy. Many of these children are orphans, without homes and dependent almost entirely upon the goodwill of the fighting forced fdr food. He instanced one such little waifi who attached himself to the kitchen at one of the rest camps and became a fast favourite with the men. When the time came for the division to advance the little chap tearfully informed his immediate friends that he had no home whatever to go to once the army moved forward and begged to be taken with them. He was only one of many thousands whoi lived like scavengers around the Allied camps and fought for the scraps which were thrown away.
