WHAKATANE v OPOTIKI

BAKER CUP MATCH

Teams from the Whakatane District High School travelled to Opotiki on Tuesday last to play the iinal matches of the season in cricket tennis and softball against teams from Opotiki District High School. Weather conditions were perfect for the and the day in consequence was most enjoyable.. In cricket the Opotiki team batted first, compiling 5(5 runs just half of which were scored by one batsman. For Whakatane the most' successful bowlers were M. Tiepa who took 4 wickets and D. Carling and I. Law with 2 each. Whalca,tane's first innings was not very successful the only batsman to reach double figures being K. Hyland with 13, and the total 35. I'n their second innings Opotiki were dismissed for *89 runs, W. Rutherford taking 4 wickets, and D. Carling j T. Davis and I. Law 2 each. The Whakatane team commenced their second innings requiring 6-1 runs to win, which they duly made for the loss of three wickets. A. Mundy, one of the opening batsmen, made a particularly useful stand to score 20. When .2 wickets had fallen for 7 runs he was paired by W. who re tired after making 26. With an,other 13 scored by K. Hyland a win was assured. When stumps were drawn Whakatane had scored 76 for the loss of 6 wickets. The Baker Cup which was at stake thus re-j mains -in Whakatane. A tennis team consisting of two boys and six girls won seven matches out of fourteen against Opotiki players, but in games the Whakatane team won 88 to Opotiki's 83— altogether a very even contest. Girls: L. Forbes lost to G. Beard 2/7; M .Gow beat C. Hata 7/2; R. Winstone. lost to J. Cox 4/7; G* Burt lost to J. Parkinson 5/7; M. Goodwin won 7/3; A. Goodwin lost to M. Ivoopu 1/7; L. Forbes and M. Gow beat G* Beard and C. Hata 7/5; R. Winstone and G. Burt lost to J. Cox and J. Parkinson 6/7; M. Goodwin and A. Goodwin lost to M. Koopu and partner 6/7. Combined Doubles: Rawson and L. Forbes beat Black arud G. Beard 19/5; Bell and M. Gow beat Steven r son and C. Hata 9/5. The Whakatane Softball team } after establishing a good was finally beaten by Opotiki 10 —7.
