BL-LAW FOR BOROUGH
PREVENTING FURTHER OUTBREAKS
The recent fire on Hi 11crest was mentioned by Cr Shapley at the. meeting of the* Whakatane Borough . Council last week when councillors expressed surprise that no existing ~ by-law covered the position requiring protection and suitable control. <. Speaking from the point of view of the Fire Board of which he .is Cr Shapley said that the present position made it most un- • fair to the Brigade, members of which were expected to turn out at all hours and fight fires in rough country which <could easily have been: prevented with the exercise of a little control. Cr Sullivan said that every year recently an outbreak had occurred and it only wanted the right to become very'serious. Hillcrest was becoming increasingly popular as a residential area and should have proper protection. On Cr Shapley's motion the Towit Clerk was instructed to draw up a suitable by,-law covering the whole Borough which would control fires in future and penalise offenders for non-complianCe,
