WHAKATANE GOLF CLUB OPENING OF 1945 SEASON . Last Saturday afternoon the club's" ca&fcsb/fivas officially opened for the .season with, a large number of menv hers and visiting goll'ers taking part. The course opened up in much more advanced condition than in previous years. The greens had been thoroughly watered weeded and top,' dressed throughout the summer recess and the favourable summer weather has enabled the. fairways to continue growth unchecked by droughty with the result that the turf is closer and more even than on any previous opening day. The President Mr L. W. Lux ton ' > in declaring the season open refers red to the excellent work done oil the course during the summer by the Greens Superintendent Mr H. Stubhs, and the Greenkeeper, 'Mr Fennell, and urged players to pre-: serve the course by care in replacing divots and handling flagsticks; etc. Mr Spence. } drove the lirst ball and the players then played Canadian foursomes over 9 holes. The best cards-.returned weretas follows:— Syme and Mrs Berg 44—8% —35%. Mr and Mrs Trask |47—9%—37%.'' Mr and Mrs Combes j47 —5% —38%.
