TANEATUA GYMKHANA

SUCCESSFUL COUNTRY SPORTS

LARGE CROWD ATTENDS

The Taneatua Gymkhana and Sports gathering which took place last Saturday drew an even greater crowd than last year when the event was considered omeJ of the best held in that centre. A particularly high standard of athletic and ring c'vents kept the spectators on • their toes whilst the usual stalls and refreshment booths did excellent business. The gate realised £91, while the proceeds of the Maori 'hangi' (over £100) were' a record. A lea Lure about the sports was the large number of entries lor the events particularly the horse section where the open jump drew no less, than twenty-one nominations. Other items were not far behind and the average was most gratifying. Oncc again athletics came into their own, and good competitive fields were witnessed. M. Philcox carried oil' the long distance honours with McCready Brothers, as close seconds. R. Hill is-fast, developing as a sprinter and notched the. 100 yards maiden and the 220 yards open. Special praise is due the Maori community for the effort; put into the 'hangi.' This popular section found many patrons and the net result was a surprise to everybody. In passing too, the Poi and Haka competitions must also be mentioned the young competitors excelling themselves in. their rhythmic displays. The Ruatoki teams are to be congratulated. Members of the Whakatane Caler donian Society's Junior Pipe Band helped enliven the proceedings during the afternoon and came in for many compliments on their bearing and their playing. The, Taneatua committee must once again be. warmly congratulated on the splendid effort put forward' and the success which attended it. Mention must be made of the joint secretaryship carricd out most efficiently by Mesdamcs Semmens and H. Hill, both of whom are to be warmly complimented on their work.
