FOOD VALUE OF BARLEY
BEER RATIONING SUGGESTED The Northern Sub-Provin-cial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union forwarded a remit urging that the Government be asked to institute the rationing of beer, especially in view of the shortage of pig food and its accentuation by the drought in Australia. It was considered that this course would assist to jjrovide the extra food required in Great Britain and Europe, and also to meet the shortage in New Zealand of other valuable foodstuffs used in the brewing of beer. Mr A. Cates (Dargaville) said that al: grain was short in the Dominion and there was no present prospect of any being obtained from Australia. If all malting barley went into the production of beer it was a serious matter. Mr E. Palliser (Springdale): It has been suggested that malting barley is not suitable as pig food. I do not know why i but the state-i ment has been put forward quite seriously in Wellington. Mr R. W. Dunning (Otakiri): Malting barley is simply high-grade barley and it is excellent for pig food and other purposes, but the price is high. It would greatly help production if something could be done on the lines suggested but nothing has been done. (A voice: Yes 5 something lias been done! They have blocked the brewing of home brew!) The remit was adopted on the motion of Mr Cates, seconded by Mr Palliser.
