GASOLINE INJECTION

POSSIBLE USE ON BUSES AND TRUCKS

War-time need for better engine performance, better than anything the enemy can produce j now seems to have speeded perfection of the injection method of gasoline feed to the point of possible use on civilian buses and trucks after the fighting. There is as yet no clue to the ultimate cost of gasoline injection, systems. Gasoline injection is far from new in principle. It was recognised in the early days of the industry t and is now used on some German aircraft engines Juno, B.M.W. etc). In one form or another injectors are universally employed on Diesel engines. The air-gas mixture that is ignited by the spark plug and burned in the cylinder gets into that cylinder in one of two ways. I—Gasoline is mixed with air in a mixing chamber, called a carburettor and is sucked '9 through the manifold into the engine by the downward movement of the piston, or it is assisted into the engine by a supercharger. Or, 2— air is forced to the cylinder head and at the right split second, fuel is sprayed in or ''injected"' to be. ignited thereafter by the spark plug. In the case of the Diesel com--3 pression of the air is so great that it.s temperature alone fires the mixture after the fuel is while with the gasoline injection, engine the spark plug is still required. Diesel compression ratios go up to 15 to one in some cases, making for colossal cylinder head pressures and temperatures compared with top compression ratios in normal gasoline automotive engines of (5.5 to 7.5 Lo one.
