County Assessor A.t its last meeting the Whakatane County Council appointed Mr Aiex Sutherland as its assessor for a further term. No Highland Dancing The Awakcri Gymkhana- Committee wish to advise that owing to war conditions there will be no Highland Dancing at the forthcoming Gymkhana. Farmers Beware ! The Whakatane County Council has instructed its inspector to take stricter action with regard to noxious, weed eradication, particularly blackberry and dewberry. Ladies' Golf Lady members of the Whakatane Golf Club are reminded that the annual meeting will be held at the Club-house after the play on April 7. Te Teko Sports Owing to the unprecedented demands upon our space we have been forced to hold over the report of the Te Teko Gymkhana which took place last Monday. A full report will appear in. Tuesday's issue, Galatea Hospital Rate \ Notification has been received by the Whakatane County Council that the Government is prepared to make payment of £563 lis 6d as general and hospital rate on the Galatea Estate. Farewell to Servicemen A farewell will be accorded the latest batch of servicemen to leave Whakatane in the Borough Council Chambers at 5 p.m. this evening. The servicemen to be farewelled include Ptes J. King } W. Rivett, R. Cave anjd D. Print who will shortly be proceeding overseas. March Rainfall The rainfall recorded on the Rangitaiki Plains during the month of March Avas 6.72 inches. Rain fell-on nine days, the heaviest fall being measured on the Ist. (5.16 inches). The total fall for the three months to date is 17.61 inches which compares with 18.74 inches for a similar period last year. In March 1944 8.70 inches were recorded.

Farmers Were Absent Reporting to the County Council on the recent Chamber's of Commerce Conference on the question of the East Coast Railway, Cr H. C. McCready said it was * a fine meeting with very able and forceful speakers. The only regrettable feature was the absence of the farming community who would be the ones mainly concerned.
