FLOODING OF STRAND
PROBLEM FOR COUNCIL
CONCERN OF BUSINESSMEN
Relerring to the continual flooding of I lie middle Strand during any heavy downpour, Cr Morpeth at last Monday's, meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council said th.at even with
a medium downpour now owners of shops in that vicinity were very apprehensive about the stormwater which gathered. He asked what measures the council contemplated taking to overcome , the trouble. The Maj'or agreed that something had to be done. The Hooding was too regular to be ignored. Cr Shapley thought the real trouble lay in the. inadequacy of the present drainage pipes, though it was aggravated by the high tides. Cr Sullivan: It is simply the cul-i mination of the increased channelling bringing an increased flow of water down the existing drains which cannot cope with it. The matter was left for later review by the Works Committee. In his remarks regarding the blocking of the Waiewe stream the '9 Chairman of the Works Committee (Cr Shapley) said that cost of clearing the pipe, under the Strand would be a major one amounting to approximately £150. The ForemanEngineer was given authority to take the necessary steps to procure plant and equipment.
