WHAKATANE ASSOCIATION
GENERAL meeting held
A ge'neral meeting of the Whakatane Indoor Basketball Association was held in the Borough Council Chambers on Wednesday evening March 14, numerous matters concerning the coming season being attended to.
Before commencing the general business, Mr A. G. Fisher ■who occupied the chair, extended a welcome to Mr C. Jones, Physical Welfare Officer whose help and enthus--iasm lie stated had done much to 9 •? set the game on its feet in this town. A cordial welcome, was also extended to Mr R. Julian a leading player l'rom Gisborne.
Outlining last season's activities, Mr Fisher stated that these were sufficiently encouraging to wararnt further expansion and the setting up of an official organisation to handle affairs in this district. New members would receive, coaching from Mr Jones and it would be but a short time before they would be able to take the field and hold their own reasonably well.
Mr G. Dixon (newly elected president) mentioned the wonderful possibilities for the new season stating that the game had thoroughly caught on in Whakatane both with players and spectators alike. He also spoke of the success- of the local players last season when both men's and ladies' teams won the Bay of Plenty Championships.
Mr Jones extended a plea for players and supporters to come forward to train as referees. He intended instituting a spccial class for those persons who wished to become such, and could assure them that ample time would be put into their trainin, as good referees were essential to the success of the sport.
It AA r as decided that the opening night of the season would be on Wednesday, April 4 when it was hoped to hold a scratch tournament for the purpose ol' initiating new members, and that entries should be solicited from business firms and any other organisations, as well as from any group of players who were able to form a team. The team entrance. fee is yet to be decided by the' committee. With regard to players' subscrip-j tions to the Association these were j lixed at 7/6 for ladies and 10/- for men. A social committee for the purpose of running dances etc. and generally taking care of social activities connected with the Association was formed the convenors being Messrs L. Rosenfeldt and A. G. Fisher. , . , The election of officers Avas proceeded with as under:— President: Mr P. Dixon. Vice-presidents: Mrs J. Winstone and Messrs G. Lodge, A .R. Knights, C. Kingsley.Smith and C. S. Annstrong. Secretary Treasurer: Mr L. Rosenfeldt. Assistant Secretary-Treasurer: Mr O. Cockburn. Committee: Messrs P. Dixon, A. G. Fisher and J. Whitehead. Field Organisers: Miss J. Grover and Mr W. McKenzie.
