COPPER TRAIL

FRIDAY'S EFFORT

RED GROSS ACTIVITIES

Residents of town and coun-

try who were incautious enough to enter the Strand on Friday found themselves smartly relieved of all copper coins (and numerous silver ones also) by members of the Junior Red Cross who once again instituted a penny trail to help build the funds of their organisation.

Proceedings commeiucd shortly after 9 a.m. when industrious weild-* ers of ,stick& of chalk were noticed assiduously marking a miniature railroad track along the pavements on either side of the main street. Almost immediately pennies started to flow in and the two former white gradually became a single brown one. As each twelve pennies was collected they were laid down end to end and a blue mark drawn across to denote one shilling's worth. Shopkeepers lent their assistance by way of changing sterling silver coin into .pennies and throughout the day the line grew visibly.

In conjunction with the copper trail, the Junior Red Cross also had charge of the shop in the Strand for the day, and ? shoppers came well up to the mark in rendering their support.

The penny trail which was. taken up at 5 p.m. showed a profit of £25 10s B*l, while the takings from the shop totalled £12 13s. Miss L. Lawes was in charge of the proceed ings and both she and the number of willing workers who lent their aid are to be congratulated on their effort.
