WELFARE RESERVE CONSTITUTED

TO BE LOCALLY CONTROLLED

19-15 QUOTA £9000

Following the request to the Patriotic Society by the Returned Services Association for a reserve of

two million pounds to be set aside as a welfare fund to aid in the re-

habilitation of returned soldiers, the Whakatane Executive of the Bay of Plenty Provincial Patriotic Council

at its meeting last Monday decided ti endeavour to raise the sum of £10 000 for this purpose. The effect of this will be to raise the quota for this area from £6881 to £9000.

Present were: Mesdamcs T. Smith and C. Wylde; Messrs J. L. Burnett (chairman) ? W. M. W. J. Murray,, b'. S. Barry and W. Sullivan. In attendance, were: Mr A. Prince (deputy Mrs E. H • Hill } Taneatua); Mr J. Merritt (deputy Mr T. Tawera, Ruato'ki); Mr J. Wil J son (deputy Mr C. E. Newton, Galatea); Mr J. A. Sax (deputy Mrs C. H. White, Wainui). It was pointed out that if the a total reserve was to be two million pounds Whakatane's share „of this would amount to £13 } 000. If a goal of £10 ? 000 were set,, the other £3000 would probably be found from.the sale of patriotic equipment at present being used overseas. The Chairman (Mr J. L. Burnett) .stated that it would mean increasing the present quota by 20 per cent which would probably present some difficulty to a number of districts and especially those which had jad difficulty in meeting their previous quotas*. He also said that once the war had finished the money which would come in from collections would be practically nil and it was therefore essential that the required sum should be raised in as short a time as possible. Mr B. S .Barry wondered if the sum named might perhaps be too large for this- district pointing out that men returning to these parts would either be rehabilitated without undue or if they chanced to be misfits 5 would drift to the city,. Discussing the additional quota, Mrs Wylde stated that even with this added i it would not bring the quotas up to the level they were two years ago. Although difficulties, concerning collecting and the lack of donations coming forward in their districts were expressed by inter_zone repre-> sentatives each agreed to do their best to raise the required sum.

It was resolved that the quota for the coming year should be. £9000 ? one-third of which should be earmarked for the locally controlled Welfare Fund.
