New Councillor Appointed At the meeting o)' the Whakatane Borough Council last Monday evening Cr C. W. Good ; the newly .appointed Councillor to fill the vacancy caused by Cr J. G. Mulholland's resignation, was listed to the Finance Committee. Orphanages Appeal The Whakatane Borough Council at its meeting last Monday evening decided to grant permission to the Auckland Orphanages United Council to hold their annual street appeal on October 19 next. Convenience to be Erected Two letters from the. N.Z. Railways notified the Borough Council last Monday that it was the intention of the Department to construct a ladies' convenience attached to the Depot on the Strand in Whakatane in the near future. Ohope Red Cross Meeting Residents of Ohope are reminded of the annual meeting of the Ohope branch of the N.Z. Red Cross Society which takes place in the. Captain's Cabin Hail on Tuesday next. All who can spare the time are urged to lend their support to this very worthy cause. Impounded Animals "A lot of funny stuff goes through the pound," sakl the Borough Inspector (M. Penny) at last Monday's meeting of the Borouglv Council. "Most of it is pretty and roams in from the County. When the hedge was last cut, some of them simply jumped clean over. In fact that's why they are. on the road. No paddock can hold them." Profitable Trade A laugh went, round the Council table on Monday evening at the meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council when Cr Morpeth declared that the Court was the most profiti able trade in the town. The subject | under discussion was the exemption of Crown property from rates. His Worship the Mayor followed up with the statement: "Yes but it's not what it used to be!"
Dogs in Strand Commenting at the last meeting of the Wha'katanc Borough Council on the. number of dogs running loose in the Strand Cr Armstrong askec! whether anything was being done tc cheek them. Cr Warren stated that only that morning he had witnessed a light between two of the specie; on the loose. It was decided to ad. vise the Inspector to report the names of the owners who would be given a final warning before actior was taken. Sealing at Waimana Following the request by the Wha. katane County Council that the Borough undertake the work of sealing a stretch of highway through the Waimana to'wnsliip the Borough Council at its meeting last Monr !J daj r gave the Borough Foreman Mr W. S. Henderson permission to pro. eeed with the work when convenient, The Foreman stated that his own programme of work was at present up-to-date and the jpb could probably be fitted in without upsetting the work in the Borough. Not Maraetotara ! The recent flooding of the Strand and of sections of Allandale, lias brought to light a singular fact that j Maraetotara is a misnomer. For years the stream which flows across the top of Valley Road lias been known by that name. Now however it transpires that its correct designation is 'Wainui.te-Whara.' The actual Maraetotara stream llows in a different direction and lias its outfall near Bluett's Ohopc. Another interesting fact is that the small stream which was responsible for all the mischief at the rear of Messrs Hamill Bros. Garage } also goes under the dignified title of 'The Waiewe.'
