BAY OF PLENTY CENTRE

The meeting of the Eastern Bay of Plenty Red Cross Centre took place in the Borough Council Chambers on Tuesday, March 1•! at 11 a.m. with Mrs Sullivan in the chair. Delegates from Kdgecuimbe, Taneatua, Te Toko and Whakatane were present.. Apologies were received from Awakcri delegates.. Mrs Semmens Junior Red Cross '? Organser gave, a list of persons she would like to form a Junior Red Cross Committee. The names* were approved with power to add. Mrs Sullivan said she had been approached by a Minister of Religion in the town asking if the. Red Cross could do anything to secure accommodation for business girls and teachers < Mho found it. very hard to obtain board. Mrs Sullivan Iliad contacted the Y.W.C.A. but they have no fund for organising branches. Members dccidcd that this did not comc within, the. scope of the Society's work, but that they would be willing to assist any organisation which would attempt an alleviation of conditions. Discussion took place, re the appointment of Mr Meachen as Red Cross Commissioner overseas to which the members too strong exception. The following resolution was passed, and it is to be sent to all Red Cross Centres throughout New Zealand: — "Resolved that this Centre makes a strong and unanimous protest against the. appointment of Mr Meachen as Red Cross Commissioner overseas as being directly contrary to the expressed views of the organisations concerned i,e. that a re--9 turned soldier of this or the last war be appointed to the position ; and that in. view of the above the appointed be cancelled." Members agreed that there was no question of Mr Meachen's capabilities but that a man who had been retained in New Zealand for essential work for the war period to be snddenlj' released for such an appointment, and that returned men should be passed over in favour of Mr Meachen was entirely wrong. It was decided that the annual meeting of the Centre be held on Tuesday. April 10 in the Borough Council Chambers at 1.30 a.m.

Whakatane Sub-Centre The monthly meeting of the "Whakatane Sub-Centre took place on Tuesday February 13 with Mrs Sulliyan in the chair. Miss Larew, "Welfare Officer lor Crippled Children Society, was pre-/ sent and reported on cases she had yisited in the district. Mrs Prideaux reported that the V.A.D. was still meeting fortnightly. It was intended to start Home Nursing classes after Easter. The Detachment is sending a delegate to the North Island V.A.D, Committee meeting in March. Mrs Timbs sent in a list of knitting done and ready for despatch. They are as follows —For Joint Council G pairs socks, 1 pair gloves, 1 scarf, 2 pullovers; for Patriotic — 1 pair bedsocks, 2 pairs socks. 1 pullover 3 balaclavas, 10 scarves. Supplies of wool can again be obtained by knitters' from the Red Cross shop. Mrs Shapley said the Comforts Committee had made six hussifs during the month. They would be packing parcels shortly. Lady Galwav Guild: Mrs Moran stated she would bo packing another consignment of garments shortly.] She would be glad of helpers, as j only one of her original helpers ivasj left. 435 garments were despatched to the Greek people. For the Entertainment Committee Mrs E. Armstrong said two men had been larewelled privately last month. They were Owen Murray and S. "Wiiulleborn, both Air Force. Mrs AYinstone said sbe bad sent £25 from the Whakatane Ilig'h School Junior lied Cross, and £7 from the Opouriao Juniors to the Greek Junior lied Cross.
