Ngatiawa Gymkhana
The attention of readers is drawn to the advertisement concerning the Ngatiawa Gymkhana and Queen Carnival which appears 011 page 8 of this issue. Red Cross Annual Meeting A further alteration in the date of the annual meeting of the Red Cross Society is necesary as the date chosen clashes with that of the Plunket Garden Party. The annual meeting will now be held in the Borough Council Chambers on Tuesday, March 20 at 2p.m. It is hoped members reading this' paragraph will tell as many as possible. Control of Ragwort In answer to the Whakatane County Council's request lor a further grant of £1000 for ragwort control the Director of the Livestock Division Wellington now advises that a further sum of £100 is approved, bringing the total Whakatane County allocation for the current year to £2900 (includes £500 -Ruatoki). The. allocation must be expended by March 15.
Taxi License Declined A further application from an Edgeeumbe taxi driver for a license for his wife in order that she would be -enabled to relieve him during working hours when he was not available was again turned down by the Wha'katane County on the grounds of precedent and the hope that a partially disabled exunable to shoulder heavy work would be given the job. Lifting of Endorsement The Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer for the Ministry of Supply and Munilias announced that motorists will no longer be required to endorse their signatures and car numbers on the backs of petrol coupons, nor will petrol require to be delivered into the tanks of motor vehicles. These requirements were enforced last year after the discovery of forged coupons and it is now con - sidered that the restrictions mav be lifted. Definite Preparations The fact that every grader and scraper which could be commissioned was on the roads preparatory to the visit of the Main Highways Board was alleged by-Cr McCready at the County Council meeting last week, when he said that the 'false alarm' as to the Board's; arrival had exposed th e preparations and opened people's eyes. "I think we should point these things out to the Board when it he declared. "We should be able to let them sec our highways in the normal state with which we have to put up with."
February Rainfall The rainfall in February taken on the Rangitaiki Plains by Mr Andrew McLean for the month of February measured 4.28 inches. There were 11 rain days with the heaviest fall recorded on the 20th when 1.12 inches were recorded. The total for the year to date at the end of the month was 10.89 inches which compares with 10.04 inches for the same period last year. The fall in February 1944 was 8.59 inches. For the second month of the present year the rainfall recorded in Whakatane was 3.69 inches.
