FASTER THAN SPITFIRE
NEW MUSTANG FIGHTER At equivalent powers, the Mustang lighter now being produced in Australia was Caster than the Spitlire, stated the Minister for Aircraft Production, Senator Cameron. The Mustang was designed by the North American Aviation Company to a British specification, he addedIts manufacture was .sponsored and developed by officers ot the Biitish Air Commission in North America against considerable opposition from American Army authorities. On its arrival in England the Mustang "was. immediately successful al though it was obviously underpowered with its Allison engine. A Merlin engine was later installed by Messrs- Rolls Royce.
Sheep by Road Large mobs of sheep have passed through Whakatanc during the last few weeks to Bay of. Plenty, l»otorn a and Waikato areas ) but the numbers from now on will not be very big'. On some days the roads had several mobs on the move at once and this caused a fair amount of delay to motor traffic. The total number to be moved. from Gisbome and East, Coast districts this year is far below that of pre-war years when 100,' DUO or more sheep ■ used to be moved by road on the Avestward trek. The opening of the railway from Gisborne'to Napier has meant that thousands of sheep have made the long" rail journey down to Palmers ton North and then up the | Main Trunk line to the northern areas. This method has meant that * the sheep have arrived in much better condition than by road and at the same time the sheep have been able to be. again pastured weeks sooner than by the old route overland from Gisborne. The number of cattle coming from Gisborne has also appeared to be a lot. below previous years.
