ASSAULT CASE

ONE MONTH'S IMPRISONMENT
Charged with assaulting his, daughter by striking her on the. face, Clarry of Te Teko, pleaded guilty in the Whakalane Court before Messrs J. King and C. H. Christcnsen yesterday afternoon. Sergeant Farrell stated that accused had been separated from his wife for about five years. His daughter resided with him. About a week prior to Feb. l(j the date on which the happening occurred, Pakeha was at Wanganui. When he returned home lie discovered his daughter, Rangi Pakeha was missing from home, and had gone to live with her mother. On the 10th Pakeha went to his wife's place with the idea of bringing back his daughter. She however, wanted to stay, and in removing her by force he struck her on the face. Accused stated that he. was in possession of two farms one of which he managed personally. On the one he was managing there was 14 acres of maize and an acre of kumaras. His absence would be detrimental to the place and he therefore asked if the Bench could see its way clear to granting him probation or a fine. The Bench stated that as the maximum was six months' imprisonment it would be impossible to do this. Accused was sentenced to one month's imprisonment in the local gaol. A second charge of assaulting his wife Tata Pakeha was withdrawn.
