BOROUGH REFUSE COLLECTION
AS from April Ist, a weekly refuse collection will be initiated in Whakatane, bringing it at long last into line with most other towns of its size in the Dominion. In a circular letter to ratepayers in the Borough the Town Clerk states. "This service is being made available in response to representations which have been made to the Council for a considerable time past from the Health Department, and frorr- Borough residents, and from the Chamber of Commerce, and the Council requests the. co-operation of all ratepayers and property occupiers in achieving the objects of the service. Some difficulty may be experienced for a period in obtaining regular garbage cans with lids, but if some improvised container is necessary meantime the local Health Inspector requires, and will ensure, that it shall be a sanitary and suitable one." The full charge of 15/- per annum, works out at 3Jd per week. This figure is infmitismal compared with the far-reaching effects of the service, and the elimination of vermin and flies. We warmly congratulate the Borough Council on coming to this decision in spite of known difficulties and the stringently abnormal times.
