Use of Codes
The Director-General Post arid 9 Telegraph Department, advises that all of the Public codes authorised for use in overseas telegrams may now he used in telegrams to France. Visit of Highways Board The postponed visit of tlie Mai a Highways Board to Wha'katane for the purpose of meeting local body representatives will take place on Monday March 5 at 11 a.ifi'. Board members will be in Whakafewi© for approximately one hour. Sir or Madam ! Mr D. V. Saunders was seen to blanch visibly at last Monday's meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council, when a letter addressed to the Town Clerk was read aloud as 'Dear Sir or Madam.' Councillors enjoyed the joke and the Clerk plunged manfully into the next business' before the unconscious humour of the incident could sink in too deeply. Forthcoming Dance We understand that the local Squadron of the Air Training Corps intends' running its annual dance on the 23rd of next month and for the occasion, has engaged the Yacht Club Orchestra from Rotorua to supply the music. This orchestra is one of. the lea'ding bands in the district, at the present time and lends its talents far and wide. Its popularity will doubtless be amply evidenced among dancers from this district. Shortage of Tobacco With practically no exceptions, smokers in the district have had the acute shortage, of cigarettes and to-' baceo brought sharply to their no-, tice. Since the sixteenth of last month no supplies worth speaking of have come to hand and the result is that many retailers themselves are combing the town with.-the gen" eral public for an odd packet of cigarettes or tobacco. Reports state? that fresh stocks should be to hand today or tomorrow.
