Following interest evinced by the Whakatane Borough Council in the enquiry J.rom Nelson, regarding the possible Government encouragement to municipal housing schemes the. Hon. Walter Minister of has Jorwarcled on a copy of the letter sent to the Nelson Borough Council for information as. to the. Government's reaction to the enquiry. I,he letter which was received at thd meeting of the Whakatane Conn-, cil last Monday evening stated that the Government realised only too well the. great problem imposed by ki . the housing shortage in, New Zealand. rilis Was further aggravated by the great shortage of building materials and manpower and it. was not possible to oiler any practical assistance' apart l'rom making money on loan available at per cent, over terms of 25 years. This scheme would apply to all municipal authorities considering the construction of not less than six houses. The houses may be. let or sold, subject to the approval of the local Government Loans Board. The Mayor: I don't think there is much we can do about this suggestion. Even if we did it would bet difficult to get. permits. f The matter was then dropped.
