EMERGENCY SCHEME
CURTAILMENT OF TRAINS ROAD TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS With regard to the recent closing of a number of the coal the following telegram was received by the Secretary of the Whakatane Goods Transport Control Committee:— "Owing to serious shortage of coal railway services severely curtailed Your committee, is authorised to provide road transport required for conveyance of perishable commodities which would normally go by rail. It may be necessary to utilise ancillary user trucks in addition to licensed operations as long hauls may be involved. If available civilian trucks , are insufficient to meet requirements endeavours will be made to arrange for assistance by army transport. Authority is given, for operators to travel outside area authorised under transport license where this is essential but permission must be obtained from the CQUtrol Committee. Oil fuel controllers have been advised to make additional petrol available on the recommendation of the committee." It must, be pointed out there is 110 connection whatsoever between these arrangements and the rail strike which was: threatened several days ago. As yet the railway has been able to continue the goods service although should it become ne-
cessary to use the road transport all who desire to do so must first contact Mr H. O. Caraway, Secretary of the Whakatane Goods Transport Control Committee and be granted a -temporary permit.
