BOROUGH TAXI STANDS
OPINIONS OF COUNCILLORS
INVESTIGATING THE POSITION
Mention in the Traffic Inspector's report to the Whakatane Borough Council that a greater and more clearly defined parking space should be made available for taxis near the Regent drew diverse comment from the assembled City Fathers last Monday evening. The upshot was: that the whole question should be referred to* the Works Committee for investigation and 1 report.
The Inspector maintained that if the parking area was increased the taxis would then keep off the centre of the Strand after theatre sessions when they became a nuisance by blocking up the traffic. The Mayor suggested that the stand could be utilised by tlie general public during the day and reserved for taxis after 9 p.m. Cr Canning opposed this suggestion pointing out that taxi cars in this town were already given ample parking space. In this he was backed up by Qx Siw-ley w ho contend that the suggestion of a half-time parking area for taxis would be futile? as many cars would require the space until after the picture sessions. If taxi stands were to be fixed they should be made permanent, so that there, would be no misunderstanding. Cr Armstrong suggested that the bicycle Stands now in front of the theatre be moved to avoid the congestion of traffic. Also that, the taxi parking sign be painted yellow to make it more prominent. On Cr Shapley's motion the Inspector's report was adopted and referred to the Works Committee.
