MAD HATTER DANCE

R.S.A, QUEEN

POPULAR EVENING

A popular dance was held in the Caledonian Hall on Friday evening representing another link in the chain of events run in connection with the Queen Carnival which is at present taking place. Friday evening's entertainment was in support of the Returned Services Queen, Miss Hazel Cave. Messrs Horace Waite and Wallie Lysaght supplied the music while, the one and only Graham Torrie filled the position of M.C. in masterly fashion. The dance was in the nature of a Mad Hatter one, and consequently, a number of dancers arrived in hats of all t3*pes and descriptions, ranging from large and middling to almost. invisible. The M.C. in particular appeared to have perpetual trouble due to the veil which hung in aristocratic lines from his select piece of headgear tickling the end of his nose. This caused him to blow outwards- continually, and thus the veil was kept wafted clear by an artificial breeze. Other styles to the fore were two imitation ice creams (sixpenny variety) tastefully arranged and worn on the side; a haystack (a fair imitation anyway); a birthday cake; and numbers of Parisian styles dating way back into the dim dark past. The prize for the best hat went to the haystack worn by Miss- uYlaslin. Popular quick competitions were held throughout the these being won by Miss J. Catchsoll and Mr Wallie Lysaght. A Monte Carlo went to Mr Bill Addison and partner. There is no doubt that the whole evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all present and the next of the series which is to take place in Whakatane at the Caledonian Hall on Friday will be warmly supported.
