CRICKET

POVERTY BAY v BAY OF PLENTY . (By "How's That") Spectators wlio were fortunate enongh to witness, the Representative cricket matcli on the Whakatane Domain during Anniversary week-end were certainly treated to some fine first-class cricket such as '9 is seldom seen in this locality. The highlights of the match were most certainly Badeley's (Opotiki) brilliant knock of 63, which included lour 4's and two 6's, and Wells' (Waimana) deadly bowling which collected 8 scalps for the small total of 30 runs. Another brilliant performance with the willow was given by L. R. Spring who hit up a brilliant. 38. His total included two 4's and one 6 until lie was miluckily dismissed Lbw. Roach also was most unfortunate at being run, out when he looked like settling down to making a few runs. McKenzie who was rather more subdued than usual, also went out early to an lbw appeal. For Poverty the most successful batsman was W. Bilham who knocked up an excellent 34 until run out by a beautiful throw in by Roach almost from the boundary line. Peter Dow ( Poverty Bay's skipper also contributed a useful 22 until skittled by Mason. Crawford-Smith 3 for 36 was the most successful bowler for Poverty Bay. Altogether the match was a great success even though Bay of Plenty Avon by 9 wickets. The attendance Avas excellent with everyone ta'king the keenest interest, in the game. The umpires in charge were Mr Heather (Whakatane) and Mr Judd (Gisborne).
