Bakers' Appeals Phillip Ernest Lynds ? baker, of appeal on behalf of Harry William Francis, employed ?' . by him as a baker at the Strand * Bakery. Francis had been with the firm for a number of. years, was •married and had two children. The **-. -appeal which was entered on the •' - grounds of undue hardshij) and public interest was dismissed subject to reservist not being called till a suitable replacement had been found. An appeal was also entered by P. .E. Lynds on his own behalf. He . had but recently taken over the Strand Bakery and Avas married with two children. Decision reserved till a reboarding had been carried out. Carriers' Difficulties A number of truck drivers had appeals entered on their behalf by the respective firms by which they were . v employed. Blrabant Bros, appealed on behalf •of F. H. a driver employed by them on the grounds of * Xindue hardship, and public interest. There was a severe shortage "of drivers obtaining and they themselves had a number of trucks standing idle Avith no men to drive them. Reservist was Grade 1 married Avith one child. Appeal dismissed; reserA 7 - ist not to be called before the end of February. For Ronald Harris. (Mr Otley) an appeal was entered by Hail and Stew, .art. Mr A. Hall Mn evidence stated '9 '9 . that they Avere greatly handicapped by the shortage of drivers and although they Avere making every endeavour to obtain more they were having difficulty in doing so. Appeal dismissed; reservist not to be called before the end of February. The Rangitaiki Dairy Company ■appealed for the retention of the ■services of Douglas Jones (married with tAVO children, Grade 1) Avno was described as an efficient lorry driver. The company Avas already greatly understaffed as regards drivers and Avould be further handicapped if reservist were taken, away at the peak of the season. Appeal dismissed; reservist not to be called before the end of March, but to be reboarded immediately. On behalf of >F. Potter,. Ronald Freeman, carrier, of Matata, enter- - ed an appeal on the grounds that he J himself was unable, to do the Avorlj ■ and reservist Avho was married Avijdi one child Avas necessary to carry the business. Appeal dismissed; /re- . servist to be reboarded immediately but not to be called till a suitable : replacement had been found, f Borough Council Appeal j William Holland, Avho aa'us, de- . scribed as a registered employed by the Borough Council Avas - for by that bodjy. Mr F. - Lysaght, Borough Electrical '' Engineer, stated thatborough had already been cut dovtro< ti;ll it carried -a minimum of staff. /He pointed out that a great deal pf time Avas spent on the plant and men Avere constantly /required to tend it. As regardsf wiring they were employed all tlife time • on. live.wire Avork and under the re- .. gulations, one man Av/as not permit-* ted to do this by himself. Appeal jdismissed; reservist Xiot to be called •till such time as a/ suitable replace..xnent had been foujnd. Miscellaneous Appeals The appeal ofreservist F. M. 'Abbott was considered under all circumstances and a, further sine die . -adjournment granted. , Thomas A. Bricjiger (married Avith itwo children j Grajde 1) (Mr Buddie) ■described as "a Accountant -of Whakatane, i appealed on the - grounds of pubM£ and also his position of Secretary to the Bay of Plenty Hospit/al Board/ Reservist stated that approximately half, his 1 Avas spent4«i this Avork. overseas. Decision reserved till further particulars regarding the arrangement with the army were obtained. Appealing on the gounds ol' public interest f John McKenzie King (Mr Otley) Rural Delivery Contractor (Grade 1, married with one child) stated that the run which was covered six days per week by the two vehicles he had on the road was a large one and long hours of work were involved. The R.D. was definitely essential to the country people who depended on it for supplies of bread and numerous other commodities. Appeal dismissed with the proviso that reservist, not be called for three months in order to allow him to find a suitable replacement . Maurice Frederick Lees (married with two Grade 1) (Mr Otley) described as a store manager at Matata appealed on the grounds of undue hardship and public interest. Reservist stated that he had one brother who had seen service overSeas and who at present was engaged in farm work at Matata. Appellant was running the business at Matata entirely without help. Decision reserved till the exact position regarding further military obligations of appellant's brother Avas defined by the Army. Mr E. Armstrong appealed on behalf of Armstrong and Co. ? garage proprietors of Whakatane for Bruce A. Watts (Mr Otley) on the grounds of undue hardship and public interest. Appellant stated that who was married with two children (Grade 1) was foremanmechanic and held a key position in the garage. He had three brothers serving overseas. Adjourned sine die for six months. K. A. Needham appealed for Eric William Tennant (Mr Barry). Appellant stated that reservist was a painter and had already seen 15 month's service in the Islands. He had volunteered to return to an essential industry. Appeal dismissed'. H. D. appealing for Robert Gibboney (married with one child j Grade 1) stated that reservist was employed by ■ the Strathmore Dairy on farm work. The farm consisted of 190 acres and 100 cows were milked. Adjourned till the end of April. Air Force Reservists Appealing against further direction, Eric D. Bloxham (married with one child) stated that he had been placed on the reserve by the Air Force and was at present ei}» gaged on farm work at Taneatua. His employer was and he was at present milking 58 cows by himself. The Board stated it . would recommend an extension ,of leave till the end of April when the position would be reviewed. Perry Reichardf (single, Grade 1) } also on the resferve of the Air Force seated that. Ite was now employed at farming a,V Matata. As no appeal was lodged he was made available for general service. Reviewing the appeal of Roger A. /Armstrong, recently released frqi'n the Air Force, the Board granted' an adjournment till the end of . Reservist was employed on 'his father's farm at Otakiri. For William James Dredge (Mr Barry), J. Dredge of Whakatane stated that his son had been released from the Air Force and had taken up farm duties but had left after several weeks. Reservist was recommended for general service;.
