A MATATA CASE MAORI TENANT'S ATTITUDE

When T. H. an elderly man now residing in Rotosought ownership and back rent for a house at Matata which was now occupied by Wharetini Hakopa in the Whakatane Court last Tuesday a sympathetic attitude was accorded' him and an order made for possession within one month. Mr Barry ? who appeared for the owner ? said that since April 1943, no rent had been paid and ' there were now arrears amounting to £42 10s. The. house was steadily going back and though the" rent was only ten shillings weekly, its delapidated condition was a continual source of worry to Mr Parkinson. The who had, difficulty in making himself understood declared that the military authorities had offered to pay him a compensating sum when . his daughter's home had been removed to make room for the Matata military camp. Mr Barry contended that he had written the military authorities who declared they knew nothing of any such transaction. The Magistrate said it was quite I clear that no one could go on living in a house indefinitely without paying any rent. He forthwith made the order and gave "judgment for back rent and costs amounting to £3 3s 6d.
