CRICKET

REPRESENTATIVE MATCH

BAY TEAM SELECTED

The following team has been chosen by the sole, selector Mr L. R. Spring to represent the Bay of plenty against Poverty Bay on January 28 and 29 at the Whakatane Domain:— C. Badeley; W. Mason (Opotiki); J. Douglas f L. piggins (Rotorua); E. Wells, V .Miller (Waimana); W. McKenzie, L. Roach, L. R. Spring (Gapt) if N. E. A. Fisher (Whakatane). J. Campbell (Edgecumbe) 12th man. As can be realised the selector's job was by no means an easy one and in all probability criticism adverse, and otherwise will be the order of the day on this, the final selection of the Bay of Plenty team. Wielders of the Willow Wood So far as the batting strength of the team is concerned there is definitely nothing lacking, providing of course the batsmen do not. suffer any unlucky breaks. In McKenzie and Roach the. home team have two excellent men who can be relied upon to tak© the edge off any kind Dl' bowling. McKenzie is definitely one of the most polished batsmen and fast bowlers, playing in the Bay of Plenty this season. He is a great stylist with a good variety of strokes and executes a terrifically hard drive to the off once he has settled down, fn Roach a newcomer to Whakatane cricket and incidentally ani ex-Wai-rarapa Rugby Rep.," the Bay team has a good solid and usually reliable. opening bat. He also plays a variety of' shots and though not a forceful batsman is a hard man. to dismiss cheaply. Probably the most colourful man in the Bay team is. L. R. Sprifng who will captain the side against Poverty Bay. He has a wealth of experience in this game of "the flannelled fools" having represented Auckland and Canterbury a few years back before the war when a place in a Provincial team was no mean feat. His coolness and strategy and also his ability to place a fieldsman in the most, advantageous position will be a decided asset to. the home team—an excellent very stylish and a good medium pace bowler. Rigden another Whakatane player has a very impressive average this season as a slow bowler.. BatSi men cannot resist attacking this slow bowler and it is usually their downfall. Rigden turns a ball either to leg or to the off and many a good batsman, has been dismissed by this veteran of many overs. Definitely he has earned his place in the team. A. Fisher is also another outstanding batsman and fast bowler whot can be relied upon to give a good account of himself. Unfortunately this pldyer suffered an injury against paroa last Sunday and may be a doubtful starter. However Fisher intends to try himself out with the ball on Saturday next and if the injury, which is a pulled muscle, stands up to the strain he will take, his place in the team against Poverty Bay on Sunday next. It would be most unfortunate for the home side to lose the services, of Fisher as he is undoubtedly the fastest bowler playing in Whakatane this season. If he is lost on account of his injury the home side's bowling attack will definitely be the poorer by his; absence. Also an excellent bat with a strong shot to leg, Badeley from Opotiki is an e-x-Waikato rep. and last, week scored a brilliant century at Ojpotiki. Little is known concerning Mason but from all accounts he is a dark horse and spectators shouljd be treated to some fireworks from this player. Douglas, of Rotorua played a bril-; liant innings against Whakatane last Sunday and it was mainly due to him and Cleland that Paroa owe their victory. Douglas has played against an English touring team and scored a beautiful 46. A stylish player and one worth watching. Higgins the other Rotorua man will also be playing and is considered by competent critics to be one of the finest players in the Bay of Plenty today. We now come to Wells of Waimana. This player could not be left out ol any Rep. team as he is. most versatile. A medium pace bowler who keeps an excellent length and a brilliant bat. His performance with the bat and ball against club teams this season speaks for itself. He is capable of executing a great number of different strokes and once settled down will punish any kind of bowling. He is also a brilliant fielder. Vern Miller a very popular playei also Irom Waimana will prohyblj

be behind the stumps. He is a most useful type of player as he also bowls an excellent medium pace ball. He can be.- relied upon, to keep the opposing fieldsmen busy.. Campbell of Edgecumbe has been selected as 12th man and if called upon to 1 play he will be like a ?ong-t winded visitor—stay for hours. Ai most difficult man to shift once he has played himself in. Public Support Warranted This completes tlie summing up of the Bay of Plenty team ana taken* all round the selector has done a great job. Whatever the result of the match ? the Bay of'PlenXty <>icSliet Asociation now domeciled In can rest assured it lone its utmost to revive interest in cricket in Whakatane by bringing these two representative teams ogether. The public can show its jy attending this match on Anniversary week-end January 28 and 29. Play will commence each day at, ).30 a.m. and finish at 6.15 p.m. The. local band will be in attendance :o rentier items. Everything* has oeen done to make this match a success for players; and public alike md a really enjoyable time at the Whakatane Domain is guaranteed. The Secretary of the Bay of. Plenty Cricket Mr F. Cameron Hillcrest, Whakatane, would welcome any suggestio'Eta as to improv-4; ing interest in cricket in this district..
